Know Anyone Worse than Yourself? (Walden)

I never knew, and never shall know, a worse man than myself.
~Henry David Thoreau, Walden

This reminds me of a sentiment which my father has repeatedly told me: "No man is a hero to himself." And isn't it true? We idealize our heroes, but we don't know even half of the secrets of our closest friends and family members. On the other hand, we know everything about ourselves. We know every weakness, every failure, and every vice. We know the man that we could be, and yet we are all-too-aware of the version that we actually are.
